Chromium plating is a process that electroplates a layer of chromium onto metal or non-metal surfaces to enhance the workpiece's hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and decorative effect. Chromium coatings are highly reflective, heat-resistant, and chemically stable, making them widely used in the industrial, automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods sectors.
Chromium Plating Process Classifications
Decorative Chrome Plating
Deposition Characteristics: Thin (0.3-1μm), bright and attractive, and resistant to minor corrosion.
Applications: Automotive trim, bathroom hardware, appliance components, etc.
Process: Typically, a copper/nickel base is plated first, followed by chrome plating to enhance gloss and protective properties.
Hard Chrome (Wear-Resistant Chrome Plating)
Deposition Characteristics: Thick (5-500μm), high hardness (HV 800-1000), wear resistance, and high temperature resistance.
Applications: Hydraulic piston rods, molds, engine blocks, printing rollers, etc.
Process: Directly electroplated onto the substrate, without the need for an intermediate layer.
Porous Chrome Plating (Porous Chrome)
Coating Features: Micropores on the surface allow for lubrication and reduced friction.
Applications: Lubricated components such as internal combustion engine cylinders and crankshafts.
Black Chrome
Coating Features: Matte black, corrosion-resistant, and excellent heat absorption.
Applications: Optical instruments, solar panels, and military components.
Chrome Plating Process
Pretreatment: Degreasing, pickling, and activation (to remove the surface oxide layer).
Electroplating: Electrodepositing a chromium layer in an electrolyte containing chromic acid (CrO₃) and sulfuric acid.
Post-treatment: Cleaning, dehydrogenation (to prevent hydrogen embrittlement), and polishing (for decorative chrome).
